Q & A with Leonard Wheeler

Q: What is your athletic background?

A: I played in junior high, but didn’t get much time on the field. In high school I played basketball, ran track, and played football in Georgia. I went to Lees McRae Junior College out of high school and played football for two years on a partial scholarship. Then, while I was playing for Troy State, I was invited to the Blue/Gray and Senior Bowl all-star games and was then drafted in the 3rd round to the Cincinnati Bengals where I played for 5 years, Minnesota Vikings 1 year, and the Carolina Panthers for 2 years before retiring in 2001.

Q: What is your typical weekly fitness routine?

A: On Mondays at 9:30 AM, I teach athletic conditioning at the Harris YMCA. I do an upper or lower body workout before at 8:30. I also train athletes throughout the week on Tuesday. I teach my Athletic conditioning class at the Morrison YMCA at 6:30pm. Wednesday morning at 9:15am I teach an Athletic conditioning class at the Siskey YMCA. I do an upper or lower body workout before and train athletes in the afternoon. Thursday morning at 5:45am I teach sculpt/athletic conditioning at the Morrison YMCA and I also Train athletes in the morning. Friday from 8:15am-10: 30 I train all of my body parts and do some cardio. I take the week end off unless I missed a work out during the week. Rest is very important.

Q: What made you turn your passion for fitness into your profession?

A: I love to workout. It gives me a sense of accomplishment, empowerment, confidence, focus, and a clear conscience that I’m healthy. I want people to experience those same feelings. In both mine and my wife’s family history we have diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, heart attacks, strokes, as well as other chronic diseases. I realized that we are not exempt from those diseases affecting our bodies, so I decided to stop that cycle of illness from continuing to be a part of my family's lives and others through a philosophy of aggressive fitness and nutrition.

Q: What is your typical daily diet?

A: In the morning, 50grams of protein, calcium and magnesium supplements and banana. Cereal or snack at 10:30am, lunch at 12-12:30pm with pasta with grilled chicken, chicken or tuna salad, turkey, fish (salmon) and salad. Then between 2-3:00pm a snack (fruit, shake, cereal, or nuts). For dinner, 5:30-6:30 grilled chicken, fish, lamb, rice, greens, green beans, salad fruit (blueberries, grapes). My secret is, I eat a big bowl of cereal every night before bed. I have to admit that I do love Peanut M&M’s

Q: What diet advice would you offer our readers?

A: Create a lifestyle change now and don’t wait another day. We also need to stop making excuses and start making decisions to change. We need to start learning about our own bodies by reading and stop depending on someone else to tell us what to eat or how to workout. It only takes effort! It is not always going to be easy to workout and eat right, but let’s always focus on the results and benefits instead of the pain and sacrifice.

Q: What is the most common mistake you see people making with their exercise routine?

A: (1) Not being consistent. (2) Not going into the gym with a game plan for success. (3) No accountability to others. (4) Not understanding the importance of training. What would you recommend to fix this mistake? Become a scholar of your body. Study, read how to make yourself better, because knowing your body will help you to start creating a plan for better overall health and fitness. Last but not least, find someone that will hold you accountable for staying in the zone for greatness.

Q: Do you have any special projects going on now?
