Q&A with Dawn Robinson

What is your weekly diet like?
I’ve eaten lean for 15 years now. I eat five meals per day. Each meal contains one lean protein, one low glycemic carb and some good fat. A favorite meal is salmon with spinach and a sweet potato with cinnamon.

What made you decide to make fitness your career?
While pursuing my own fitness goals, people began asking me how I got in such great shape and could I show them how to work out. Some fitness trainers I knew were telling me that I looked like a trainer, so I figured if I look the part and people are treating me like a trainer, why not become a trainer? The thing was I really wanted to reach the “forgotten” population that could not afford a $60-150 an hour trainer. I realized they were asking me because they felt they didn’t have access to this information. I really enjoy helping people to feel better about themselves and increase their level of capability. Now I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Tell us about your business.
I do “group personal training” meaning I have 5-6 people at a time, but each person has their own program according to their needs. I compare it to the restaurant business. It provides flexibility, rather than rigid start times and therefore clients are able to juggle their schedules and still make it into the gym when they can, rather than a specific set schedule. They come in, I get them started with an exercise, give them a number of reps and sets, check their form and then go show the next person what they do next. I continually check on each person to ensure they maintain proper form. Since my personal training studio is one large warehouse, I can see everyone and am easily accessible.

What are your health and fitness goals for the future?
Professionally, I would like to continue to provide an economical resource for fitness. Personally, I plan to continue my lifestyle of exercise and eating right and being positive.
