“When people are in charge of their lives and taking care of themselves from within, their physical and emotional health usually improves. Anything that Gaston Radiology can do to increase awareness of health issues will be a big stride toward stamping out disease.”
Gaston Radiology (GR) dates back more than fifty years to a time when Dr. Leslie Morris opened his first imaging office in the old brick medical building beside Gastonia’s main post office. Today, it has grown into a state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging center that employs 17 radiologists and a staff of highly-trained technologists. Their mission is to provide exceptional inpatient and outpatient services to the people and physicians of Gaston and surrounding counties.
Over the years, GR radiologists have watched imaging evolve from plain black-and-white negative images to high-detail computer-generated images. Because of these advancements in medical technology, certain invasive procedures are no longer necessary; they can be performed under the direct guidance of a radiologist.
All GR physicians are board certified radiologists who have been carefully selected based on their special skills and experience. Most are also subspecialty board certified in areas like Neuroradiology, Interventional Radiology, Breast Imaging, Musculoskeletal and Nuclear Medicine.
Their state-of-the-art imaging equipment is constantly being upgraded. It currently includes:
• Two 64-slice CT scanners (a third scanner is in the process of being installed)
• Three 16-slice CT scanners
• One open MRI
• Three closed MRI machines
• Four nuclear medicine cameras
• The regional PET Center
• Women’s Imaging Center (digital mammography will be installed by fall 2006)
• Eight ultrasound units
• Fluoroscopy and routine x-ray
• Bone densitometry
Using the latest PACS technology, Gaston Radiology digitally creates and stores all images on their computer system. This provides instant access to all of a patient’s studies for comparison. PACS also allows doctors to review studies and radiology reports from their offices at any time – perhaps even during a patient’s appointment.
GR radiologists provide services at Gaston Memorial Hospital (GMH) and two hospital-owned diagnostic imaging centers. One of these imaging centers, Summit Place, is home to the new Women’s Imaging Center with five mammography rooms, four ultrasound rooms and a bone density room. The regional PET Center is also housed at Summit Place. Expanded services include an 18,000-square-foot, all-digital facility in Belmont that was completed in January 2005.
Gaston Radiology physicians and staff give back to the community through participation in many events including Relay for Life, the MS Walk, Heart Walk, health fairs at various churches, schools and workplaces.
They became one of the CWC’s Platinum Sponsors because they agree that healthcare is not just about caring for people after they become ill; it also involves education and preventative therapy. Radiology technologist Ally Cagle explained, “When people are in charge of their lives and taking care of themselves from within, their physical and emotional health usually improves. Anything that Gaston Radiology can do to increase awareness of health issues will be a big stride toward stamping out disease.”
