How does a health-conscious individual measure the results of a wellness program? WellnessMax, provider of custom-designed wellness programs can show you how. WellnessMax blends physical therapy, fitness, holistic and integrated services to improve overall health. Serving individuals, physicians and businesses who refer their employees, WellnessMax operates under the rule that being well and living longer requires more than managing health issues in singular fashion.

From cardio-vascular health to nutrition, strength, and flexibility to body composition, and stress and lifestyle modification, the professionals at WellnessMax not only justify and prescribe wellness recommendations, they measure the results using new technology to assess six important measures of health. Every client works one-on-one with a WellnessMax professional to acquire a results-based personal wellness program.

“Our objective was to fill a gap that we saw in the Charlotte market. That is physical therapy based fitness,” said Gary Barnes. “Many individuals, [baby] boomers especially, have physical or medical conditions that inhibit their ability to get fit. Our objective was to allow people to have the opportunity to have a physical therapy evaluation first and then have a fitness program designed just for them.”

WellnessMax clients are people who seek performance, not just fitness. Others, such as physicians often prescribe patients specific action plans after injury, surgery or illness. Still others are cutting edge corporations who understand the value overall health plays in employee productivity and reducing healthcare costs.

For some people, diet, exercise, fitness programs or physical therapy alone don’t solve a variety of problems. Many physicians instruct patients to lose weight or get fit without giving patients tools they need to do so. WellnessMax provides an integrated method that includes the knowledge, tools and facility to assist clients with making necessary lifestyle changes to look and feel better. Changing nutritional habits and working out are just parts of a good lifestyle modification, WellnessMax has developed a core set of services using the latest technology to generate reports that inform and act as guidelines.

WellnessMax provides:

• One-on-one treatment with the physical therapist in conjunction with other integrative services to provide a holistic model for rehabilitation
• Use of alternative techniques to manage pain and inflammation with minimal use of modalities
• Provision of therapeutic group exercise to include TheraYoga, TheraPilates, to facilitate body awareness and self  empowerment
• Customized programming with transition to wellness services for a continuum of wellness
• Integration of the patient into the process and decision making for all treatment and goals

The company also caters to individuals who have not responded well to traditional physical therapy approaches and want to continue their rehabilitation, who want holistic care grounded in scientifically based techniques and those interested in changing lifestyle habits.

Since stress is another factor in poor health, WellnessMax along with nearly every health care provider cautions that consistent stress weakens the body’s defense system, decreases concentration, efficiency and energy level. This scenario can cause the body to become prone to health problems, yet research shows that exercise and fitness can reduce stress. WellnessMax has a wide range of fitness including strength training equipment, spinning cycling class, cardio equipment and mind/body classes such as yoga, Pilates, meditation/breathing, tai chi, Feldenkrais and therapeutic massage. WellnessMax also offers THERAPEUTIC GROUP FITNESS including TheraPilates and TheraYoga taught by physical therapists.

“We like to measure results and we do this by utilizing Heart Rate Monitors (HRM’s),” said Barnes. “In this way we can track their progress and show them how well they are doing. We feel this is unique in the market place.”

WellnessMax also offers Polar – BodyAge™ which is a computerized health assessment system. This portable mini physiology lab can be used to determine current state of health and assess disease risk. The system records heart rate, blood pressure, body fat, flexibility, strength and cardiovascular fitness and saves the information to provide a BodyAge™ score. Comparisons between a patient’s chronological age, their body age and an obtainable body age is calculated to produce the patient’s customized list of recommendations.
